SHARP has revealed a possible design for smartphones of the future: and they fold vertically.
That means they flip down length-ways in the middle, just like the classic Motorola Razr flip-phone of yore.
It’s in stark contrast to recent foldable gadgets like the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, which are tablets that fold down to smartphone size.
The Sharp concept smartphone is built using a hi-tech foldable OLED display.
OLED screens offer flexibility and incredible colour, contrast and power efficiency – but they’re difficult (and therefore expensive) to make.
Sharp’s concept device measures 6.18 inches from corner to corner, which is actually less than the gargantuan iPhone XS Max (6.5 inches).
The device is fitted with an ultra-sharp 2992 x 1440 pixel resolution, and serves a wide DCI-P3 colour gamut – which means it can show any colour used in a Hollywood movie accurately, basically.
Sharp promises that its foldable OLED screens can live through 300,000 folds and unfolds, and potentially even more.
